"I wanted to save the little Palestinian babies. Of course I did. That's what I had always wanted to do. And when I worked with this agency, it became very clear very quickly that it was essentially just a tool to indoctrinate children and turn them into child soldiers. The chapter in my book is called, My Brother is a Martyr, My Cousin is a Martyr, My Uncle is a Martyr. So we did thousands of interviews with young kids in Gaza and West Bank. It was my job to code them. And that means you have to pull out the words that are used most often so you can get a picture of what's going on. And the key word that came out was martyr. Wow. Not, you know, I wanna be a doctor when I grow up or a lawyer or I'm doing this or that. It was martyr, martyr, martyr. I actually coded it over Christmas. This was the second time I cried in my job and thought this organization has given more money to these people than any other group of people in the history of international aid. So if the business I'm in, the aid business, has given all of its resources to this group of people and fucked it up so profoundly to the point that it is indoctrinating children, what does it say about the rest of aid?"
