"I am five years old, I want to go to school, I miss my parents. I have two kids and when I read this, I heard my own kid's voice because that's what this is. This is a child's handwriting, a child's fear, a child's comfort, a child asking someone anyone to notice them. And I think about tucking my own five-year-old in at night with a cup of water and an eyeline and someone checking on them to know if they're sick and if they need a doctor. I don't wait days to see one. But right now there are toddlers in Dilley, Texas who don't have that. More than 5,600 people have been held there since last April and on any given day over 220 of them are children. There's a federal law that says a child cannot be held more than 20 days and one family has been there for over nine months. Twins went in at four years old and they have turned five behind a fence. Nine months, that is longer than I carried either of my kids. And I don't care where you land on immigration policy. I care that a child wrote this letter by hand, hoping that it would reach someone who would actually read it. And so I'm reading it and I'm asking you to hear it too. My faith says, open your mouth for the mute, for the rights of all who are destitute. And these children aren't mute. They are writing. And we just have to be willing to listen and to speak up alongside them. Because last week, people across Nashville woke up to these same letters handwritten by these same kids posted on walls all over the city because someone has to make sure that they're seen. Please follow letters from Dilley and read their words. There are advocates working inside Dilley right now who need our support. Go and find out how to help."
