"Hi from Pottery History. I thought I would share some of the meanings behind the symbols on medieval march panes. These were used to decorate sweet almond confectionery, often for special occasions. And the designs carried meaning that the people at the time would have immediately understood. This one shows three strawberries. It is thought that the shape symbolized the drops of Christ's blood, so that the strawberry itself was in the shape of the drops of blood that fell from Christ during his crucifixion. And the three lobes were seen as symbols of the Holy Trinity. So you've got the three lobed leaves there and you've also got three strawberries. So you've got that message repeated here. So even something as small as this carried a lot of meaning to the medieval population. And here we have the cross. These were seen in the medieval world as the victorious cross, not just a symbol of suffering, but of resurrection and triumph over sin and death. What I find particularly interesting is that these objects appear in everyday life. Even something as simple as a decorated sweet could carry belief, celebration and meaning all at once. We have various other designs that I don't happen to have as we've sold out. If there is a symbol that you feel is missing from our collection, we would love to know what that was. And maybe we can make your wish come true. Pot at History, where we have history in hand. Visit our shop or contact us if you have a project you'd like to bring to life."
