"I'm Rob Oxley from the public health nutrition team at the University of York and I want to table Fix Our Food's latest research into the benefits of free school meal auto enrolment. We understand that under the current opt-in system about 11 percent of pupils do not take up their entitlement. This is for a variety of reasons including stigma, shame and literacy barriers. Some local authorities with the support of Fix Our Food have been able to increase registrations for free school meals through auto enrolment. While we're still looking at the final numbers at the end of last year 35 local authorities had implemented auto enrolment with many more in the process. We gathered data through several methods to put overall an additional 22,000 children registered for free school meals and this led to a massive ยฃ27 million in pupil premium funding for schools."
