Why won't the Minister of Labour pass our legislation and ban tip theft? Nova Scotia is one of the only provinces where employers are legally allowed to steal tips from workers. This isn't right, and we've been calling for a ban tip theft for years — but for some reason, they won't listen.
"Is there any reason not to have tip protection? Seven provinces have it, why don't we have it? Have you heard any argument why employers should be able to pocket some of that money? Like I said, I mean, tips should be expected to go to the people and into the workers, right? Sure, but why not just write that into the code like the seven other provinces have it? I'm just saying that there's a process, you know, that I'm here to do everything I can to support workers. We're not promising to do that. But we have to, it has to be done carefully. There is a jurisdictional scan. It shows that most places protect against tip theft. We don't, so protect against tip theft, period. We have so many people in this province who are working one, two, three jobs and relying on gratuities in many cases to pay rent in what is one of the most expensive jurisdictions for rent in the country. And the fact that this government won't even protect those workers, you know, and allow them to keep the gratuities that they themselves earn raises a lot of questions about who this government is working for."
