The Challenge of Using a Noise Gate in VO

🎤 Whisper Transcript (en) ⏱ 72s

"So imagine it this way. It's like, imagine you're going over to visit your neighbors and they've got, there's some sort of, there's a loud party going on in the house, but it's in the house. And so you really don't hear so much of it outside. But as soon as they open the door to welcome you in, it's like, boom, you can hear people talking, music playing, people laughing. But as soon as you close the door, it stops that noise. That's what a noise gate does. And what triggers the noise gate is sound, the sound of you speaking. So when I'm recording, the noise gate is open. It allows my voice to go through. And when I stop talking, the noise gate senses that I'm not talking and it closes. And it stops any background noise from getting in into my recording. The problem with that is, when the gate is open and I'm talking, not only is it picking up what I'm saying, but it's picking up what's going on behind me. So it can sound really weird because the noise gate then closes and it's like, there's nothing. And then I start talking and then there's all this noise behind me. And you don't want that.
