"Here's a list of 10 childhood experiences that predict adult mental health outcomes, oftentimes better than any other variable we have in psychiatry. Most parents have never heard of it and some of those experiences are happening right now in otherwise normal homes. It's called the ACE study Adverse Childhood Experiences. And it found things like witnessing parental conflict, emotional neglect, growing up with a parent struggling with addiction or depression, not just abuse, not just the dramatic stuff, these experiences accumulate. The higher the number, the higher the risk for depression, anxiety, addiction, and chronic illness in adulthood. I'm Dr. Sam and what I need parents to hear is this, knowing about ACE is not about guilt, it's about intervention because the research also shows that one consistently warm present adult in a child's life can dramatically shift those outcomes.
