"The state campaign spending commission says Sylvia Luke's campaign for lieutenant governor had too many errors to be overlooked. The commission says after reviewing records for friends of Sylvia Luke in 2021 and 22, it found more than 55 amended reports, more than $32,000 in late reported contributions, more than $50,000 in unreported expenditures, and 232 checks written by people who weren't authorized. Reviewed as a whole these are not minor technical errors. They occurred in a campaign for lieutenant governor run by a candidate who was then the house finance chair and who had more than 24 years of legislative and political campaign experience. The three commissioners voted unanimously to refer the case to the attorney general for possible criminal charges. Vice chair Danton Wong recused himself saying he gave money to Luke's campaign before being named to the commission in 2024. Luke herself was not there and our attorney David Louie said little at today's hearing. But at this time I take no position and I have no further comment. This complaint is separate from the attorney general's investigation into the mystery lawmaker who received $35,000 which Luke is already under investigation and has denied any wrongdoing. And because of that, Louie stated in a letter to the commission last month that Luke would not be able to testify against the campaign spending commission's claims. Well obviously no one wants to be the target of any investigation much less two separate investigations so it doesn't look good for her in general but you know we're a long way from any conclusion that she's actually done anything wrong whatsoever. These laws and regulations exist because the public has the right to know who is funding the candidates, how campaign money is being raised and how it is being spent and whether that money is being used for legitimate campaign purposes. And the staff believes that the conduct laid out in the complaint before you today strikes at the core of that purpose. The attorney general's office had no comment because it says it hasn't received the referral yet but says we'll review it once received. Stephen Florino KH12 News working for Hawaii."
