Early detection saves lives. Here’s an update on my successful surgery for early-stage breast cancer and why I’ll keep fighting for a country where no one has to wonder whether they can afford life-saving healthcare.
"Hi friends. I have some personal news to share. In late spring, I went in for my annual mammogram after receiving a routine reminder letter in the mail. I almost put it off, but I am really grateful I didn't. That appointment saved my life. It detected early-stage breast cancer. It's been quite a journey so far balancing doctors' appointments between campaign events, but last week I had a very successful surgery and because we caught this early, my prognosis is excellent. It has a 99% cure rate. I'm feeling great and I'm not missing a beat on the campaign trail or serving on the city council. We're over the moon to have won the primary. I've already raised another million dollars going to the general election and we're going to win in November. But moments like this do put it all in perspective for me. You know, sitting at the doctor's office, waiting for test results, talking to friends and family. I couldn't stop thinking the whole time how fortunate I am. I have access to healthcare. I got my mammogram, my biopsies, my surgery without having to worry about whether I could afford it. But for millions of Americans, they don't have that same security and that needs to change. This experience has made me more resolved to fight for a country where healthcare, women's health and medical research are protected and expanded, not cut or taken away. I'm also sharing my story because early diagnoses save lives. One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. And know if you're facing this, you're not alone. And I'm not alone. I am grateful for the community that I have, my friends, family, my healthcare providers and the love of my life. My fiance Sarah has been with me every step of the way. So I feel strong, ready to win and ready to keep fighting for a country where no one has to wonder whether they can afford the care that could save their life. So I'll see you out on the campaign trail. Come join me and let's do this."
