We have an ultra-right Supreme Court. Here’s how we should reform it.
"Let's call a spade a spade. We have an ultra-right Supreme Court. Of the nine justices on the Supreme Court, three were appointed by Donald Trump. And because of these three justices, the Supreme Court has overturned Roe v. Wade, paving the way for half of all states in America to have severe restrictions or bans on abortion. And more recently, they rule to limit legal immigration in two cases regarding temporary protected status also known as TPS and asylum seekers. Under the TPS ruling, the Trump administration can now end humanitarian protections that have permitted hundreds of thousands of people to live and work legally in the United States. And under the asylum case, the Trump administration can now deny people seeking safety in the US before they even have a chance to make an asylum claim because of a well-founded fear of persecution in their home countries. Essentially, the Supreme Court has greenlit Trump and Stephen Miller's mass deportation campaign to go after even more people who were here legally and fear returning to countries where they could be killed, tortured, or starved to death. As the ranking member of the immigration subcommittee, I will continue to do everything I can to fight back against these efforts and expand permanent protections and pathways to citizenship for all of those affected by these Supreme Court decisions. We also need to seriously reform the court. We need to expand the Supreme Court so it actually represents the American people and not just mega extremists. We need to enact term limits so ultra-right justices don't spend decades preventing progress in a lifelong appointed position. And we need to pass my ethics and transparency bill with Senator Elizabeth Warren so that the Supreme Court is subject to an enforceable code of conduct just like every other federal court. My bill would create an actual process for justices to recuse themselves when they have a personal connection to a case. It would stop justices from getting bribes like gifts and privately funded travel, and it would ban federal judges from owning individual stock. We deserve an impartial court that isn't beholden to special interests, personal agendas, or any president. We deserve a court that respects longstanding judicial precedent as well as the decisions of lower courts. We deserve a court that doesn't hide behind a barrage of shadow dockets that pass down consequential rulings with no explanations. It is time to actually enforce checks and balances so that we have a fair and balanced judicial system that preserves a real democracy."
