"Italy has ordered the expulsion of two military attachés from the Russian embassy in Rome over allegations of espionage. The diplomats Ivan Petrovich Gorbachev and Mikhail Vasilyevich Astakov were instructed on Thursday to leave the country within three days. Italy's decision came after the arrest on Tuesday of two Italian nationals, both former intelligence officials, who were suspected of supplying classified information to Russian operatives. According to the Rome Prosecutor's Office, the arrests were part of a broader investigation, launched in May 2025, that also involves five additional individuals. Investigators believe that the suspects received financial compensation for supplying confidential information, including plans related to rearmament in Italy, the EU and NATO, the locations of drone production facilities and details of military support for Ukraine."
