"One reason, this sort of accelerated spiritualism, is that he loses several relatives in the First World War, including his son, Kingsley. Arthur Conan Doyle, the great popularizer of the paranormal. Very ironic, given his ultra-rational creation, Sherlock Holmes, but there we have it. He first gets into seances and telepathy in 1887. He begins investigating poltergeists himself, and he believes basically every medium who crosses his path. There is no skepticism. I love how credulous he is. He thinks he's psychic himself, and to him, it's God. He calls it a new revelation, comforting the bereaved. He's found sort of a new way to help humanity."
