"RNIB, the Royal National Institute of Blind People, knew about this book beforehand because at one point we come across Astor who's reading runes with Braille and he's got Echo, he's his guide wolf as well. How did RNIB help craft Astor or make it more sensitive for readers with maybe a sight condition? Absolutely, RNIB's help has been invaluable. So when I wrote Astor, obviously I really wanted to make sure that I didn't fall into any harmful stereotypes. I've always said that representation matters, but it only matters if it's done right. So when I spoke to Puffin, when they signed me, I said to them, look, I need to get a sensitivity reader for Astor. I knew that Puffin had links to the RNIB and I just thought that was brilliant because I just wanted to make sure that Astor was authentic, that his voice was authentic and yeah, he came across as true as he could because it's not my lived experience. So the RNIB's help was just so crucial to creating Astor's character."
