"My name is Kareem Alam. I'm a lifelong Vancouverite, proud son of a businesswoman who was a Sudanese refugee, an Egyptian colonel who knew both the true cost of conflict. I'm running to be your next mayor as the candidate for the Vancouver Liberals. My mother's family and their journey as refugees taught me that Vancouver's greatest strength is that we are a place of refuge, opportunity and community. And on that point of being a place of refuge, Canada, BC, Vancouver never gave up on my family and as a result, I will never give up on yours. The false narrative that our poorest are to be the target of public policy that has been the backbone of Ken Sim's campaign has been the biggest burden I have carried in my life that I once gave my support to this man. It is my resolve, it is my commitment that I will never give up on anyone just as no one ever gave up on me nor my family. Refuge, opportunity and community supported by a world class economy, we will fight and we will protect that. We will bring young people back and we will honour the generations who stood before us and built this great city. This election is about choosing hope over division, results over rhetoric, a big tent future where everyone has a seat at the table. Vancouver Liberals have built that team of diverse, experienced candidates standing beside me, ready to deliver. Together we can create a city where young families stay.
