We’re asking Torontonians what they’d do if they were mayor. Graham Churchill would turn the Toronto Islands (and Harbourfront) into the greatest natural and historical attraction on Earth. 🏝️🏙️ What would you do? Tell us: ifiweremayor@thestar.ca Read more: trib.al/Sl7IN36
"If I were mayor of Toronto, I would champion one idea above all others, the Toronto harbour lands. Great cities have great public spaces. What does Toronto have? The Toronto Islands. My vision for Toronto is simple. Transform the waterfront into a single, connected, year-round destination. Close Billy Bishop Airport. Build swing bridges across the eastern and western gaps for pedestrians, cyclists and streetcars. And create a waterfront streetcar loop linking Harbourfront, the Islands, the Portlands, Cherry Beach, Ontario Place and Exhibition Place. Build a world-class convention centre in the Portlands overlooking the harbour. And in the process, turn these lands into a great new city destination. It would include turning the Herne Generating Station into a landmark, much like London's Battersea Power Station and the Leslie Street Spit into a new beach walk. Together, these projects would connect the Toronto waterfront from the beaches to the Humber and become one of the world's great urban destinations. The waterfront is where Toronto's story began. Let's make it where Toronto's future begins. Let's create the Toronto harbour lands and let's give Toronto its own central park."
