"Capturing the voices, the stories and lived experiences of survivors of the Tum Mother and Baby Institution is at the heart of a new exhibition now on display at Galway City Museum. Survivors Stories is the first dedicated museum installation to focus on mother and baby institutions and their impact on Irish society. I hope that the students will study it and see for themselves when they grow older and say yeah this won't happen again in Ireland. The exhibition tells the stories of 18 survivors of the institution through audio and visual exhibits. An accompanying podcast series has also been created. Survivor Teresa O'Sullivan says her mother would be proud of what's been achieved here in the museum. She could very very much see the wrongs that were being done. She was a Catholic and she still believed in Holy God and all of that and I think here today she was saying this is the right thing to do. The exhibition includes portraits of survivors, testimonies and audio documentation. It also includes a detailed scale model of the Tum Mother and Baby Institution created by Catherine Corliss. One of the most poignant pieces is a lock of hair from writer and survivor JP Rogers. The lock of hair was cut from his head by his mother Brydie in 1948 when he was forcibly separated and she kept it with her when she was sent to the Magdalene Laundries. This is the first museum exhibition dedicated to the survivors of mother and baby institutions on the island of Ireland. Every aspect of what you see here has been survivor led. The stories have been curated thanks to the help of staff at the University of Galway, the museum here in Galway City and the survivors themselves. In the words of one survivor speaking here today, if you don't know you have a personal connection to the stories here, you simply don't know it yet. Nigel Dugdale, Virgin Media News, Galway."
