"Pakistan in my view has given up on the idea of diplomacy to address this crisis. It's concluded that the Taliban essentially have to learn a lesson, so to speak. They have to be hit by military force to compel them to curb their ties with these anti-Pakistan militants in Afghanistan. That's one thing. And secondly, going back to the relationship between the Taliban and the Pakistani Taliban, the Afghan Taliban and the Pakistani Taliban, the Taliban do not turn on their allies. They didn't turn on al-Qaeda. They don't turn on the groups that are the militant groups that are loyal to them. So even mediation from the Chinese, in my view, is not going to be something that would compel the Taliban to go against the grain of its behavior for many years, which is to tighten its embrace of these militant groups and not and not loosen them."
