"There's one line in every landscape painting that deserves more attention than any other. Your horizon line. And just like choosing a seat on an airplane, you don't want to be in the middle. Try to avoid placing the horizon line right in the middle of your canvas. That splits the painting in two and often makes a composition feel static and boring. Instead, move it higher or lower. A low horizon makes the sky the star. A high horizon lets the landscape take center stage. Before you paint, decide what you want to be the focus and place your horizon line accordingly. On a side note, I entered my photo in a local contest in the land and seascape category. It lost to a photo of the side of a building that included zero sea or land.&lt;/p&gt;

<p class="text-xs text-slate-350 leading-relaxed break-words">Image Composition Rule #1: NEVER (95 percent of the time, anyway) place the horizon line midway between the top and the bottom of the frame.
If the horizon line is vertical in a particular work, DO NOT place it midway between the left and right edges of the frame! Jim's post explains why. 💯</p>
