"America wasn't built by immigrants. It was built by settlers. You've probably heard that one before. So where did those settlers come from? Because unless they spontaneously emerged from the soil, they came from somewhere. Immigrants, right? Every single generation of Americans decides that the new immigrants are bad. They're ruining the country without looking at historical patterns. The Irish were hated. The Italians were hated. The Jews were hated. The Chinese were hated after they built the transcontinental railroad. Japanese Americans fought for their country while their families were back home in internment camps. Scientists fleeing fascism turned America into a global superpower. And somehow, every single time, the people who are being told they don't belong here end up helping to build the America you celebrate. So as we approach our 250th birthday, maybe it's time to recognize that immigrants aren't the issue. The issue just might be that we've been having the same goddamn argument for 250 years. And history, that stubborn bitch, keeps giving us the exact same answer. Thank you."
